LANCASTER GATE, LONDON W2 3 bed apartment
area: 2982sqft / 277sqm
Value At Completion: £3.25 million This apartment within a Grade II listed building just north of Hyde Park was notable for its huge 40ft long ballroom living space. However the rest of the apartments rooms were by comparison small, poorly designed and spread over four floors, the lowest of which could only be accessed by a lift. The brief was therefore to create a cohesive interior that reflected and continued the grandeur of the ballroom throughout the apartments many disparate spaces. The design approach was to work with any perceived negative aspects and play along with them to create a series of distinct zones. Each zone was given its own character, by using a variety of materials and carefully chosen finishes. The existing dark entrance hall and narrow link corridor to the ballroom was made darker and more enclosed by screening existing windows to create an environment that would contrast sharply with the light space and airy high ceilings of the ballroom beyond. The lowest level of the apartment existed essentially as a basement space. Here the lack of natural light was taken advantage of to create a media room with a coloured light wall, motorized projection screen, surround sound, and its own separate bar and bathroom.
